WASHINGTON, DC—During a speech on the Senate floor this evening, U.S. Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) called for passage of the DISCLOSE Act to ensure voters know which special interest groups are funding campaigns.  During his speech, Lautenberg exposed how two major contributors of secret money in politics, David and Charles Koch, are able to influence elections without disclosing their activities.

Voting shortly after Sen. Lautenberg's speech, Senate Republicans blocked action on the DISCLOSE Act.

Senator Lautenberg is a co-sponsor of the “Democracy Is Strengthened by Casting Light on Spending in Elections” (DISCLOSE) Act of 2012, which is carefully targeted to ensure transparency and accountability for campaign-related fundraising and spending by outside groups.  The bill requires any “covered organization” that spends $10,000 or more during an election cycle to file a report with the Federal Election Commission within 24 hours of the expenditure, and to file a new report for each addition $10,000 or more that is spent.
